Off-Track and Emergency Garage Door Repair in Kitchener
A door off its track is heavy, unstable and hanging on whatever is still holding it. The first job is to make it safe; the second is to find out why it came off.
Some garage door problems can wait for a convenient appointment. These cannot: a door that has come off the track and is hanging crooked in the opening; a door stuck open in January with the house's heat pouring out and the car exposed; a door stuck shut with the only car inside on a workday morning; a door that has dropped and will not lift because a cable let go. On those calls you go to the front of the queue. We do not promise same-day, because a promise that cannot always be kept is not worth having; we give you an honest arrival window when you call and we keep to it.
What to do while you wait
- Do not run the opener. It will make an off-track or spring-broken door worse and can bend the top section or strip the gear.
- Do not try to lift a door that is crooked or has a broken spring. A double door without its spring weighs what a large appliance weighs, and a crooked door can drop the moment it is freed.
- Keep people and pets out of the opening. A door hanging on one cable can fall.
- If you have a second vehicle outside and need to get in, the man door is the route, and if the house has no man door that is a point worth remembering when the door is replaced.
Why doors come off the track
Rarely for one reason. A cable frays and snaps, one side drops, and the rollers pop out of the track on the other side. A track bracket's lag screws loosen in a jamb that has seen twenty winters of damp, the track spreads, and the rollers leave it on the curve. A car bumper or mirror bends the vertical track, and the door jams there the next time. A roller stem snaps. An opener forces a binding door until something gives. The repair puts the door back on the track and then addresses the cause, because a door put back without that comes off again.
What the visit involves
The door is stabilised and clamped, the spring tension is released if it has to be, the sections are walked back onto the track one roller at a time, bent track is straightened or replaced, failed cables, rollers or hinges are replaced, and the door is rebalanced and tested through full travel before the opener is reconnected. Damaged sections are assessed honestly: a bent top panel can sometimes be straightened and reinforced with a strut; a creased or torn section is replaced if the model is still available, and if it is not, you are told what the choices are rather than promised a match that does not exist.
Stuck open in winter
A door that will not close in a cold snap is usually a photo-eye blocked by drifted snow or ice, a bottom seal frozen to the slab that has then torn, or a spring that snapped as the door reached the top. The first is a two-minute fix you can try yourself: clear the sensors and check their indicator lights. The others are a visit. If the door can be closed by hand and locked, do that and keep the heat in until the technician arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Do you offer 24-hour emergency service?
No. The hours are posted on this site and calls go to voicemail when the technician is on a job. Stuck doors get priority within those hours, with an honest arrival window rather than a same-day promise that cannot always be kept.
Can an off-track door be fixed or does it need replacing?
Usually fixed. The track goes back in alignment or is replaced in sections, failed parts are replaced and the door is rebalanced. Replacement comes into it when several sections are creased or the door is old enough that the parts are no longer made.
The door closed on my car and the top panel is bent. Now what?
The opener's force reverse should have stopped it, so the opener gets tested as part of the visit. The panel is assessed on site: a bend can often be straightened and reinforced with a strut, a crease usually means replacing the section, and whether a matching section exists depends on the door's age and maker.
